Trader Joe’s, a cherished grocery store among many, recently fell to third place on YouGov’s latest popularity ranking. The survey, conducted over the last three months of 2023, placed ALDI as the top grocery store with a 66% popularity rating, followed by 7-Eleven at 65%. Trader Joe’s came in close with a 64% rating, a slight decline from its previous second position. The popularity score reflects the percentage of people with a favorable opinion of each grocer.
Though Trader Joe’s rating improved from the previous year, a growing appreciation for its competitors altered its ranking. Kroger and Whole Foods finished the list’s top five, with popularity ratings of 61% and 57%, respectively. Other notable mentions within the top ten included Publix and Safeway.
Generational and gender differences significantly influenced grocery preferences. ALDI led among Generation X and Baby Boomers, whereas Millennials preferred Trader Joe’s. Meanwhile, Trader Joe’s garnered strong support from men, receiving a 65% popularity score. Women rated 7-Eleven more favorably, awarding it a 69% score.
Whole Foods, now part of Amazon, shows varying popularity across age groups as well. While scoring 59% among Baby Boomers and Millennials, younger consumers ranked Whole Foods lower than Kroger and Circle K. However, Amazon Fresh—a sister brand—resonates strongly with Millennials due to its online convenience, though older generations rate it lower.
Overall, the evolving landscape of grocery store preferences highlights a competitive market where convenience and variety play significant roles.
