Videos showcasing teen skincare routines are trending on social media, but they may cause concerns like barrier disruption, irritation, and allergic reactions. A recent study from Northwestern Medicine analyzed 100 TikTok videos by young content creators, finding these routines featured numerous potentially irritating ingredients. These can lead to skin allergies and conditions like contact dermatitis, which may limit lifelong cosmetic choices.
Most alarmingly, only a small fraction of the skincare regimens included sunscreen, a critical component for all ages, especially teens. Dermatologist Dr. Hallie McDonald highlights the unnecessary complexity of these routines, often driven by social media, and emphasizes a basic approach for teens: gentle cleansers, moisturizers, and sunscreen, avoiding excessive use of active ingredients that may damage developing skin.
Dr. McDonald advises using fragrance-free and hypoallergenic products tailored for young skin, protecting the skin barrier and offering gentle care. She stresses the importance of integrating sunscreen into daily routines to prevent UV damage from an early age, rather than focusing on trending but potentially harmful products.
