Moving over popular vegetables like kale, it’s now time for beans to shine. “Nowadays, more people demand wholesome foods as they cut down on meat consumption, and beans are seen as an affordable and environmentally friendly protein source,” says Ashley Kitchens, a registered dietitian. These legumes are not only protein-rich but offer a multitude of health benefits.

In previous years, beans faced criticism for supposed toxic elements known as antinutrients. Elizabeth Huggins, another dietitian, explains that these concerns are often exaggerated, and proper preparation significantly reduces such substances. Beans are often excluded from low-carb diets because of their carbohydrate content, but they shouldn’t be dismissed so easily.

Beans are a notable plant-based protein source and offer something animal proteins do not—fiber. “Many individuals miss out on dietary fiber, and beans are rich in it,” says Autumn Bates, nutritionist and wellness consultant. Fiber creates a sense of fullness, regulates blood sugar, and fosters gut health.

These nutritional powerhouses support heart and gut health, managing cholesterol and reducing chronic disease risks. Beans also provide essential vitamins and minerals. Their variety means they each offer something unique in terms of nutrition and cultural value. Opting for a variety of beans ensures a balanced intake of essential nutrients.

Whether soaked dry beans or ready-to-eat canned variants, both offer substantial health benefits. While dry beans allow for controlled ingredient usage, canned beans are also a viable option when low in added sodium and sugars. “Ultimately, the best beans are those you eat regularly,” adds Huggins.

Black beans and kidney beans are high in fiber and antioxidants, while chickpeas offer more protein. They also have a low glycemic index, aiding blood sugar control. Including different types of beans can contribute significantly to a balanced diet.
