Guide to Legally Cutting Your Own Christmas Tree

Obtaining a permit from the U.S. Forest Service allows you to cut down your own Christmas tree while contributing to forest health.

Although many have switched to artificial trees, live trees remain a cherished tradition for families, providing a special experience. However, purchasing a tree can be expensive.

Contrary to scenes from movies, cutting a tree from the wild is illegal without a permit. Here’s how to get a permit and enjoy selecting and cutting your tree.

In 2023, the median price for a real Christmas tree was $75. A Christmas tree permit costs between $5 and $20 from the U.S. Forest Service, potentially saving you around $80 per tree compared to buying from farms.

Permits are available online, with sales starting in November. Use recreation.gov to find forests with permit options and remember that each forest has specific guidelines. Most participating forests are in the Western United States, with states like California offering numerous locations.

It is essential to adhere to each forest’s guidelines about the number of trees and maximum tree size. You can finalize your purchase by printing your permit, which must accompany you on your tree-cutting adventure.

For children in the fourth grade, a free permit is available through the Every Kid Outdoors pass. Cutting trees can enhance forest health by thinning overgrown areas, reducing fire risks, and promoting biodiversity.

To extend your tree’s life, cut it a few weeks before Christmas and ensure it’s well-hydrated. Check the tree’s freshness by gently pulling its needles. Measure your space and car before cutting to avoid size issues.

If chainsaws are prohibited, pack an ax, handsaws, and other tools. Bring supplies to safely transport your tree home, and ensure everyone is dressed warmly and safely prepared for the weather.

Cut trees close to the ground to promote regrowth. Shake your tree to remove any pests before bringing it home, and always prioritize safety during tree cutting.

Remember to check weather conditions and be prepared for winter roads with a safety kit in your vehicle.
