2025 Decor Trends Designers Want to Say Goodbye To

It’s early 2025, and interior designers are already looking to put some of this year’s decor trends behind them. Three experts discuss five popular trends from this year they’d prefer to retire, and what they’d like to see instead.

Designers are eager to move away from ultra-neutral rooms lacking character. Michael Graham-Smith, founder of Graham-Smith Designs, believes homes shouldn’t resemble stark showrooms. Similarly, Molly Solich of Molly Solich Design is over minimalist, cold spaces. Instead, she advocates for spaces filled with color, texture, and unique furnishings that bring freshness and personality.

Mass-produced art from large stores is another trend Solich is ready to leave behind. She suggests supporting artists directly through art fairs, galleries, or social media for unique, inspired pieces. Graham-Smith remarks that while organic forms have been trendy, their overuse makes homes feel overly designed. He recommends balancing these with clean lines for timeless appeal.

Audra Samnotra from Social Swan Decor encourages embracing darker wood tones over commonly used white oak to avoid blandness. She identifies darker woods as sophisticated and timeless. Samnotra also suggests rethinking arches: while decorative arches are worn out, architectural arched doorways maintain elegance and classic charm.
