Succulents, known for their cute appearance and resilience, are ideal houseplants, especially for those new to gardening. They require minimal maintenance and come in many shapes and sizes. Despite their drought-tolerant nature, it’s crucial to water them correctly to ensure their health.
Nathan Heinrich, a horticulturist, emphasizes the lack of a fixed watering schedule for succulents. Factors like soil type, plant variety, weather, temperature, climate, and humidity influence watering frequency. In their natural habitat, succulents may absorb moisture from the air, preferring dry soil.
The golden rule is to water when the soil is dry. Overwatering can lead to discolored, wilted, or mushy leaves, ultimately harming the plant. Avoid watering when the soil is damp.
For indoor succulents, place the pot in a shallow bowl, add water, and allow the plant to soak for 30 minutes. Drain excess water and avoid direct sunlight that can scorch leaves.
Outdoor succulents, especially in dry climates, may need more frequent watering. Watch the soil’s moisture content and adapt your routine accordingly. Heinrich advises against planting succulents with plants needing different watering schedules.
