Most of us have a favorite spot, like a cozy couch or chair, where we relax, nap, or even work. Over time, these spots can become dirty and stained, especially if you snack while lounging. Fortunately, you can clean your upholstery in about 15 minutes using common household items.
First, check for a care tag on your furniture, often located under the cushions or at the bottom. This tag contains codes to guide you on the proper cleaning method for the fabric. If the tag is absent, test a small, hidden area with the 15-minute cleaning method before tackling the entire piece.
For cleaning, use the upholstery attachment and crevice tool on your vacuum to remove loose dust and soil, starting from the top and working down. Be sure to vacuum the back, sides, and underneath the cushions as well. A tool like the Gleener Fabric Shaver & Lint Brush can help remove debris and pet hair.
If you’re using a commercial cleaner, like those for pet stains, follow the label instructions. Alternatively, you can create a homemade cleaner with 1/4 cup dishwashing liquid and 1 cup warm water, mixing to create suds. This cleaner can also be used to spot clean non-machinable items like picnic blankets.
For overall upholstery cleaning, mix 1 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid per gallon of water in a bucket. Have a second bucket of clean water ready for rinsing. After cleaning, use a damp microfiber cloth to remove any soapy residue, as it can attract more dirt if left.
Allow the upholstery to air-dry, avoiding direct heat or sunlight. Using a fan in the room can help speed up the drying process. Ensure the upholstery is completely dry before use to maintain cleanliness and longevity.
