Ensure Your Bra is Up to Date: Key Signs for Replacement

It’s likely time to replace your bra sooner than you think. If it’s been more than six months since your last bra shopping trip, your current bras may no longer provide the support they once did. Various factors, including weight changes and natural wear, mean bras have a limited lifespan. Lingerie experts suggest different signs to look for when assessing whether you need a new bra.

“Typically, bras should be replaced roughly every six months, or after around 180 wears,” says Ali Cudby, author of “Busted” and founder of Fab Foundations. She recommends keeping track of how often you wear and wash each bra. The wear-and-tear over time can stretch out your bra’s straps and back band.

“The back of the bra, with time, can lose its snug fit,” says Josie-Anne Le Diouron, a bra expert. Adjust the hooks to regain tightness, but if on the last hook your bra still feels too loose, it’s time for a new one. Additionally, slipping straps indicate they’re stretched out too much.

If there’s a noticeable gap between your breasts and the bra cups, it might be due to the cups being overstretched or weight loss. Proper cup fit is essential for support and avoiding visible lines under clothing. If you’re spilling over the cups, your size may have changed or the straps require adjustment.

Underwire pain or poking means the bra has reached its end. Rather than temporary repairs, Lecigne from Jockey advises getting brand new bras. Persistent discomfort or unexpected pains can often result from poorly fitting bras.

Fabric deterioration, such as peeling spandex or elastic threads, are definitive signs for replacement. Good support primarily comes from the band, so compromised elastic means compromised fit. The aesthetic condition, like faded colors, also affects how you feel in your lingerie and reflects its utility.

Changes in fashion taste—even beyond structural issues—justify refreshing your lingerie. A bra should empower you and ensure comfort. “Feeling good in what you wear—including bras—affects confidence,” observes Jaclinne Cheng, CEO of Spicy Lingerie.
